Creating
 a Community:

People, Passion, Purpose and Commitment

Johanna Cunningham

Dear Friends,

While the kids are swimming, hiking, camping, playing with friends and creating lifelong memories and friendships, Vicky and I have been hard at work creating community connections.

In fact, I recently attended an event where creating community was discussed.  I could not agree more with this viewpoint and I want to thank you for being part of creating our PARTY Community

In order to be a succussful community though, you need to create a pathway that is easy to follow and one that people can identify with - a little like the yellow brick road.  There is no sense leading if no one is there who wants to follow you, right?

So, how do you create a passionate and purposeful community that draws people to commitment?  In my mind, it is accomplished when a single focus and vision is created that compels one to action - like the PARTY Program, and that includes YOU!  PARTY is not just about exposing our teens to the consequences of risky behavior.  It is so much more.

Yes, It is does teach our teens, PRIOR to driving privilages, what poor behavior choices can cause.  Yet, PARTY is more than that, it is for ALL of us who drive and share the road with others.  PARTY is just one resource, but the result affects all of us.  So, enjoy this months newsletter and join us in our efforts to keep our Community Safe.

Sincerely,

Johanna M. Cunningham

  Program Mission

To promote injury prevention through reality education, enabling youth to recognize risk and make informed choices about activities and behaviors.

  Program Goals & Objectives

  Go to Top of Page

Program Goals and Objectives:

·       To educate youth to recognize risks.

·       To increase youths’ awareness of personal responsibility for their choices

·       To increase youths’ knowledge of the impact of serious injury on quality of life.

·       To empower youth to make informed, smart choices.

·       To promote other injury prevention initiatives

·       To contribute to a reduction in the incidence of risk-related trauma for youth.

  Program Format

The P.A.R.T.Y. Program is a 4-6 hour session, in a hospital setting, where student from local junior/senior high schools come and observe the path of an injury survivor; from pre-hospital care through to rehabilitation.  They meet professionals that would care for them in a trauma situation.  Paramedics, Emergency Physicians. Nurse and Therapists describe the painful journey of a trauma patient.

  Program Content

  Go to Top of Page

Facts are presented about head and spinal cord injury and the students have hands-on experience with the equipment used in trauma care and rehabilitation.  Teens tour through Emergency and Intensive Care Units, viewing a simulated patient and the equipment used in their care.  This is a very powerful part of the day as it brings realism to what they have learned throughout their day.

The most powerful part of the day is the injury survivor presentation.  Young people talk frankly about their injuries, the events that lead to the injury and what their lives are like now.  Students have the opportunity to ask questions of these injury survivors to gain a better understanding of what someone goes through when they are injured.  The injury survivor talks about their family, friends, the injury and how it affected each aspect of their lives, before, during and after the injury.  This by far has the greatest impact on teens and leaves an impression that for some lasts a lifetime.

Students are empowered to recognize risk and are exposed to the line where everyone has a line of choice between safe and dangerous.  There are five things they learn to do:

·        Buckle up,

·        Drive sober,

·        Wear the gear,

·        Look first,

·        Get trained.

They are given aids to help with this through items like

·        The Contract For Life

·        Friends for Life Cards

·        Risk Continuum

RACC(Recognize that risk exists, Assess the risk, Consider a behavior that will decrease injury and death, Consider the consequences)

    FRIENDSHIP HOLDS THE KEYS

Awareness is key to keeping our children safe.  They need to know that we are aware of where they are going and that we are committed to keeping them safe.  Therefore, we encourage both the kids and parents to keep these cards handy when their kids go out with friends.  They are then encouraged to pass it on to others, so the learning can continue.

Spotlight Safety Article - Sponsored by State Farm Insurance

  Go to Top of Page

This month our Corporate Sponsor, State Farm, and State Farm Agent, Audrey Smith-Wiberg (916-988-5493) sent us this article that speaks to the statistics that surround teen drivers.  Here are a few highlights, additional resource links,  http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/  or http://www.hwysafety.org/

So, your teenage son or daughter wants to drive! Scary, isn't it?  As parents, we all share the fear of our children becoming involved in an automobile accident.  These concerns are all too often confirmed by the reality of teen crash statistics.  Although premiums are derived from the monetary cost of auto accidents, lives are priceless.  No amount of premium can ever bring back a life or reverse disabilities.

* Teenage passenger deaths occur more frequently when a 16-year-old is driving than when a person of any other age is at the wheel.

* Thirty-nine percent of all 16-year-old drivers involved in fatal accidents in 2004 were speeding or going too fast for the road conditions.  This compares with only 23 percent of drivers between 20 and 49 years old.

* A study by the California Department of Motor Vehicles, found that although teenagers drive only half as many miles as adults, their accident rate per mile is four times the adult rate.

Two things your child can do to help you pay less for auto insurance:

1. Many insurance companies offer lower rates to young, single drivers who are better than average students in high school or college.  They do that because statistics show good students have considerably fewer accidents than students whose grades are average or below average.

2. Obey all traffic laws.  You can't always avoid an accident, but you can avoid traffic tickets, which can cause your insurance premiums to go up.

The above statements and statistics were taken directly from the "Teen Drivers" article, provided to us by State Farm Insurance.
